At RB, we have long been committed to using materials such as plastics, paper and board wisely. We are reducing our packaging as much as possible, eliminating waste wherever we can through innovation. We are committed to creating a circular economy and we have instituted targets to reduce our use of plastic packaging by our own brands by 2025, organised using the ‘4R’ approach – reduce, replace, reuse and recycle. They include making 100% of our packaging recyclable or reusable and to include at least 25% recycled plastic content in our packaging by 2025 where safety and regulations allow.
The presence of microplastics in the environment is also an increasing concern, due to their potential to harm marine organisms and enter the food chain.
Recognising the potential negative impact that microplastics could have on the environment, we have been taking steps to stop using microplastic beads since 2016. Alongside this a number of microplastics have been added to our restricted substances list, we are collaborating with industry partners to minimise the release of microplastic particles into the environment and are supporting research initiatives on detection, risk assessment and degradation of microplastic particles in the environment.
